In game one of the Class L Final Four, Memorial beat Salem 49-41 at UNH. Memorial knocks out the defending two-time State Champion Salem.

Coach Mike Fitzpatrick takes Memorial to the Title Game in his first year at the school. Senior Jason Chevrefils poured in 27 points in the win,

Trinity survived a scare from Alvirne and held on to beat the Broncos 65-59. A late three-pointer from Cormac Fitzpatrick, Mike’s son, sealed the deal for Trinity.

It’s all Queen City Saturday as Memorial takes on Trinity. No 1 vs. No. 3.

Just when you thought all was well with the #6 Winnacunnet Warriors comes this pre-tourney bomb from Head Coach Jay McKenna…”Unfortunately the rumor that you have been hearing is true.  Both Kyle Ratcliffe and Harry Knowles have been dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons.”  No other info is available, but you can guess McKenna isn’t happy to be making that type of statement on the eve of his team’s 1st round Class L tournament game against #11 Exeter.  The Warriors were without both Ratcliffe and Knowles during the earlier part of the season because of suspensions and started off slowly at 3 and 5.  But they got both players back and went on to win 8 of their final 10 to finish 11 and 7 and earn the 6th seed and a home playoff game tomorrow night.  The Warriors are very deep, even without their top 2 players, so look for Ryan Dunn, Ryan Dubois, Jared Gillis, Jesse Gould, Nate Roe, Nick Datilio and Nate Vincent to step up.

1st off, I’d like to thank Manchester Memorial’s Mike Fitzpatrick and Exeter’s Jeff Holmes for helping us here at WGAM figure out the seeding and pairings for the Class L Tournament that begins on Wednesday night.  I’m proud to say we were the 1st media outlet to report the “unofficial” brackets before the NHIAA confirmed what we thought to be true today.  We couldn’t have done it without Coach Fitz and Coach Holmes digging deep into the complicated NHIAA tie-breaking procedures!  Rumor has it Coach Holmes pulled out all his hair trying to figure it out.

See below for the “official” tourney pairings, some thoughts on each 1st round match-up and my prediction on how I see the whole thing working out…

#1 Trinity vs. #16 Keene…I know a 16 seed has NEVER beaten a #1in the NCAA tournament so I’m guessing it’s never happened in NH high school Tournament history either.  Good luck to the Blackbirds in this one, although they only lost by 7 during the regular season in Keene.  Trinity moves on easily!

#8 Manchester West vs. # 9 Nashua South…West got the best of South in Nashua during the regular season, 53-48 which gives the Blue Knights home court for this one.  As is the case with most 8-9 games, this one could go either way.  I’m picking South to win behind the strong play of their big 3 Jake Nelson, Josh Ramos and Dan Feehan.  

#4 Manchester Central vs. #13 Londonderry…Central beat Londonderry in a low scoring affair in last year’s quarterfinals, 41-32.  The Little Green won during the regular season this year too, 58-47.  I like Doc Wheeler’s team this time around as well. 

#5 Pinkerton vs. # 12 Alvirne…With good bigs like Brennan Donnelly, Sean Moyen and Ryan Sweeney, Alvirne has the size to deal with Pinkerton’s MASSIVE front court of Zach Mathieu, Ben Proulx, Alex Rees and Scott King…but super soph Caleb Donnelly has no where near enough backcourt help to handle Astros PG Colby Verge and SG Beau Cassidy.  Pinkerton wins.   

#2 Salem vs. # 15 Timberlane…After a surprising 2-2 start, the 2 time defending champs closed out the regular season winning 13 of 14 and are playing their best basketball of the season right now, which is bad news for the rest of Class L.  The Blue Devils move on.  

#7 Bishop Guertin vs. # 10 Dover…Whoa!  This one has the potential to be one of the best games of the 1st round.  Dover beat BG by 11 early in the season, 77-66…but that was on the seacoast.  This time they meet at “The Colligodome”.  Still, I see Dover’s killer B’s, John Boyatsis and Alex Burt having just enough to get by a young, but SCARY Cardinals squad led by PG Jamie Zajac and silky smooth Sophomore Sean McClung. 

#3 Manchester Memorial vs. # 14 Spaulding…People in Manchester have been buzzing about the return to hoop prominence of the Crusaders ever since Coach Fitzpatrick took over prior to this year.  Still, aren’t you a little surprised to see them with a 3 seed?  I’ll admit I am.  Despite that, I’m picking them to beat the Red Raiders who made a Cinderella run to the semis last year with Lucas Croteau.     

#6 Winnacunnet vs. #11 Exeter…Another doozy, similar to Dover/BG and West/South.  Either team is capable of winning, but I give the nod to Winnacunnet playing at home.  Glad to see Coach McKenna was able to right the ship after such a tough start…on and off the court.

It’s the final night of our “Friday Night Lights” NH High School boys basketball coverage with the Class L regular season wrapping up and the Class I tournament hitting the quarterfinal round.  We’ll have reporters  at all 4 Class I games…#1Pelham vs. #8 Lebanon, #7 Milford at #2 Pembroke, #5 Monadnock at #4 Laconia and #3 Oyster River vs. #6 Portsmouth.  We’ll also have several big Class L games covered featuring Salem at Central, Nashua South at Pinkerton, Dover at Exeter and West vs. Spaulding.  All of the games tip off at 7pm.  Tune in tonight after the Monarchs game for a 1 hour recap show highlighted by postgame reports from our correspondents who were at the games…and be sure to check out this blog for a “live” scoreboard and “Peak Performers”.  And don’t forget the “Friday Night Lights” Saturday show tomorrow morning from 8a-10a where you’ll hear from many of the coaches that played the night before!
